Millions of years in the making

In the shadow of a volcano, massive slabs of solid tectonic rock rise from the seabed to form an island.

With craggy ridges and sheltered bays, one distinctive north facing valley is shaped like an ancient amphitheatre.

Trapping and reflecting the sunlight, its fate is determined. It is destined to favour the grape like nowhere else.

The hidden secrets of a mysterious place

It should not be possible to grow these grapes in this place – a riddle wrapped in an enigma.

A mystery explained only by the sea breezes and a secret buried just below the surface. A metre-thick layer of weathered Aeolian dust deposited during the last ice age.

Sedimentary clay that shrinks, cracks and expands with the change of seasons.

This is harsh soil for grapes. Survival is tested every year. Vines that answer the call yield fruit with distinctive character, flavour and structure.
